ABOUT

OUR MISSION

The marketplace is missing representation from its most vital contributor: the consumer. Due to rapid technological advancement and third-party interests, the status quo disenfranchises consumers and prohibits them from meaningful participation. New approaches and incentives are required to balance the scales.

My Data Union, a Public Benefit Corporation, is the collective that unites its members’ call for change. Its foundational principles are as follows:

  1. To recognize members as the rightful owners of their digital property, and to provide comprehensive tools, education, and services enabling them to exercise their privacy and property rights;
  2. To establish a marketplace for consumer data through which members may conduct transactions on a consensual and equitable basis; and
  3. To serve as the representative of members, advancing their collective interests through advocacy, negotiation, and active participation.

My Data Union shall pursue these public benefit purposes alongside and in balance with the financial interests of stockholders, with the understanding that creating long-term value requires maintaining member trust through transparent and member-centric practices.

A NOTE FROM OUR AUTHOR

I have spent my professional life pursuing a deeper understanding of how people work together to form the global economy. It is a messy, dynamic puzzle that constantly humbles even the most confident observers. Along the way, I have held various roles within the financial services industry that morphed me into the curious accountant and skeptical investor I am today. I am once lucky for the time, resources, and motivation the jobs provided me throughout my career. I am twice lucky for the patience, love, and wisdom shared by family and friends in my journey.

People have an inalienable right to control their property, which includes their identity. I believe the proliferation of digital services muddied people’s understanding of what belongs to them, and their lack of agency is interpreted as a voluntary surrender. I wanted to know how and why we were nudged here, so I studied the problem with similar approaches and resources that I used during my previous jobs. What I discovered were perverse incentives and structures that can only be addressed by informed, organized consumers. I can help people instigate change and created My Data Union to act as the vehicle. I hope the research I publish challenges people to think differently about how their digital property is managed, and that the tools My Data Union disseminates provides them with the authority to redefine how the market uses their property.
